An Artist Views Landscapes From the Inside Out
Artist Statement
Jane Barton at the easel.

My paintings are a journal of my life, my internal and external wanderings. I’ve painted landscapes that were right in front of me and I’ve painted landscapes that were places I’d like to be at right at that moment. Both were places I’d like to be able to return to again and again.

I paint what is inside me at the time and often it appears on the canvas as a place: a place of peace and joy, a place of loneliness or serenity or sorrow. Or sometimes all of these together. I paint for me--I am my first audience--but also to share with other people. The power and joy of knowing that someone else feels what I felt, wanting to be there, feeling like they actually were there, is amazing. "I’ve never been to Wyoming, but looking at this I feel like I was!" said one viewer to me. "That barn looks so lonely, yet so strong!" said another.

Many people have felt the same things I do, they’ve visited the same emotional landscapes. You don’t have to get on a plane to travel to these places. Find an artist who speaks to you and hang on!
